What you always wanted to know about Doo Wop...

typical street corner scene

Now, what is actually Doo Wop?

This is a good and much discussed issue. There are  different approaches to explain it and every authors of this issue has its own aspects which he Doo Wop classified. I think it futile trying to put this striking style in any drawers and i am sure: every Doo Wop Fan immediately recognice if a song is one or not!

Most of us are knowing Doo Wop, but just assign it to Rock'n'Roll. Titles such as 'Rama Lama Ding Dong', 'A teenager in Love' or 'Sixteen Candles' are just some examples for that. It is indeed a very own style, with elements of Rock'n'Roll, but also, or particularly elements of the Rhythm'n'Blues. Additional some Gospel and Vocal Harmony - the whole seasoned with nonsense-syllables like 'Shoo Bee Doo' or 'Be Doo Be Doo Be Wop Wah' - ready is the Doo Wop Song.

Such nonsense-syllables were responsible for the name of the music: the chorus of 'When You Dance' (1955 by the Turbans) published the first syllables 'doo wop' than with. But that time this music wasn't called doo wop, this started in the 60's. The earlier songs you would find in the R'n'B Charts, later with the entrance of the white groups it came more and more into the Pop (Billboard) Charts.
